Test cases for cab, auto and bike taxi booking

Cab and auto booking covers setting a pickup and drop, comparing bike, auto and cab fares, meeting the driver, starting the ride with an OTP and paying at the end. It fails in the field when GPS puts the pickup on the wrong side of the road, when a network drop during the driver search books two rides, and when battery savers on budget phones stop trip sharing in the middle of a ride.

P1functionalreal phone
  1. Open the app outdoors with location on and wait for the pickup pin
  2. Search for a drop location and select it
  3. Choose Auto and tap Book

Expected: The pickup shows your street or building, a fare estimate is shown before booking, and the confirmation shows the driver, vehicle number and a ride OTP.

Why a real phone: The pickup depends on a real GPS fix at your actual location.

CAB-02

Drag the pickup pin to the right gate

P2functional
  1. On the pickup screen, drag the pin to the gate across the road
  2. Read the address label as the pin settles
  3. Book the ride and check the pickup in the driver test app

Expected: The address label updates to the pin's new spot, and the driver app shows the dragged pin as the pickup, not the original GPS point.

CAB-03

Use a saved place for pickup or drop

P2functional
  1. Save Home and Work with their pins
  2. Start a booking and tap Home as the drop
  3. Edit the Home pin, then book again

Search a drop by landmark or partial name

P2functional
  1. Type the first few letters of a well-known landmark in your city
  2. Search for a common place name such as Railway Station or MG Road

P2functional
  1. Set a pickup and a drop about 5 km apart
  2. Look at the bike, auto and cab options

CAB-06

Driver is assigned and the approach is shown live

P1functional
  1. Book a ride and wait on the searching screen
  2. Accept the ride from the driver test app
  3. Watch the rider app until the driver reaches the pickup

Expected: The driver's name, photo, vehicle number and model appear, the marker moves towards the pickup with a falling ETA, and an Arrived message shows at the pickup.

CAB-07

Start the ride by sharing the OTP

P1functional
  1. When the driver arrives, read the ride OTP in the rider app
  2. Enter that OTP in the driver test app
  3. Watch the rider app

Expected: The ride starts only after the correct OTP, the status changes to On trip with the drop shown, and the OTP is no longer displayed.

CAB-08

Pay by UPI at the end of the ride

P1functionalreal phone
  1. Choose UPI as the payment method
  2. End the ride from the driver test app
  3. Tap Pay, approve in an installed UPI app and return

Why a real phone: Needs a real installed UPI app and the switch out and back.

CAB-09

Pay cash at the end of the ride

P2functional
  1. Choose Cash as the payment method
  2. End the ride and mark the cash as collected in the driver test app

CAB-10

Pay from the in-app wallet

P2functional
  1. Top up the test wallet with more than the expected fare
  2. Choose Wallet as the payment method and complete a ride
  3. Check the wallet balance and its transaction list

Expected: The wallet is debited by exactly the final fare, once, and the transaction list shows the ride with its date and amount.

CAB-11

Receipt matches the fare charged

P2functional
  1. Complete a ride that includes a toll or a waiting charge
  2. Open the receipt in the app and in the email

Expected: Both show pickup, drop, distance, duration, each fare component, taxes as your app labels them, the payment method and the total charged, with times in IST.

Validation & negative6

CAB-12

Pickup or drop outside the service area

P2negative
  1. Move the pickup pin to a place outside the service area
  2. Then set a drop far outside the area your app serves

Expected: The app says rides are not available there before you can book, and no fare is shown as if the ride were possible.

CAB-13

No drivers available

P2negative
  1. In a test area with no online drivers, book a ride
  2. Wait on the searching screen until the search ends

Expected: The search ends with a clear no drivers message and options to try again or pick another vehicle type, and nothing is charged.

CAB-14

Cancel within the free cancellation window

P1negative
  1. Book a ride and let a driver accept it
  2. Cancel straight away and choose a reason
  3. Check the ride history and the next ride's bill

  1. Book a ride and wait until the driver has arrived at the pickup
  2. Tap Cancel ride
  3. Read the confirmation before tapping Yes, cancel

CAB-16

Driver cancels after accepting

P2negative
  1. Book a ride and accept it in the driver test app
  2. Cancel the ride from the driver test app

Expected: The rider sees that the driver cancelled, no fee is charged, and the app searches again or offers to rebook with the same pickup and drop.

CAB-17

UPI payment fails at the end of the ride

P1negativereal phone
  1. End a ride with UPI as the payment method
  2. Enter a wrong UPI PIN in the UPI app and return
  3. Retry with the correct UPI PIN, or switch to cash

Expected: The first attempt shows as failed without marking the ride paid. The retry or cash payment settles the ride, and only one debit appears in the UPI app.

Why a real phone: The decline happens inside a real UPI app with a real UPI PIN.

Edge cases6

CAB-18

Final fare for an unchanged route stays within the estimate

P1edge
  1. Note the fare estimate when booking
  2. Complete the ride without changing the drop or adding stops
  3. Compare the final fare with the estimate

P2edge
  1. Start a ride and tap Change drop
  2. Pick a new drop farther away and confirm
  3. Complete the ride and open the receipt

P2edgereal phone
  1. Stand at a large railway station, airport or mall
  2. Open the app and look at the suggested pickup points
  3. Choose a pickup point and book

Expected: The app suggests named pickup points near you, and the driver app shows the same point you chose.

Why a real phone: GPS error at large stations and airports needs testing at the real venue.

CAB-22

Book a ride for someone else

P2edgereal phone
  1. Choose Book for someone else and enter a test contact's name and number
  2. Book the ride
  3. Check the test contact's phone

Expected: The other person gets an SMS with the driver, vehicle number and OTP, and the driver app shows that person's name as the rider.

Why a real phone: SMS delivery to the other phone depends on the real carrier.

CAB-23

Wallet balance is lower than the final fare

P2edge
  1. Keep a wallet balance below the expected fare
  2. Choose Wallet and complete the ride

Expected: The app uses the wallet for part of the fare and asks for the rest by another method, or asks you to choose another method. The balance never goes below ₹0.

Interruptions & network5

CAB-24

Network drops while the app searches for a driver

P1interruptionreal phone
  1. Book a ride on Wi-Fi at home
  2. While the app is searching, walk out of Wi-Fi range or into a lift
  3. Reconnect on mobile data and open the app

Expected: The app shows the one ride that was booked, with its driver if assigned. It does not book a second ride or go back to searching for a ride already assigned.

Why a real phone: Real Wi-Fi to mobile data handover and lift dead zones drop requests unpredictably.

CAB-25

Show the ride OTP with no network

P2interruption
  1. Book a ride and wait until a driver is assigned
  2. Turn on aeroplane mode, as if in a basement parking area
  3. Open the app

CAB-26

Rider app is killed during the trip

P2interruptionreal phone
  1. On a 3–4 GB RAM phone, start a ride
  2. Use the camera and two heavy apps for a few minutes
  3. Return to the ride app

Expected: The app opens straight into the ongoing trip with the map, fare estimate, Share trip and SOS available, not the home screen.

Why a real phone: Only real low-RAM phones kill background apps this aggressively.

CAB-27

Driver's phone stops sending location

P2interruptionreal phone
  1. Use a Xiaomi or Vivo phone with battery saver on for the driver test app
  2. During the approach, put the driver app in the background and lock the phone
  3. Watch the rider app for a few minutes

Why a real phone: OEM battery savers on the driver's phone throttle background location in real use.

CAB-28

Incoming call while confirming the booking

P3interruptionreal phone
  1. Select a vehicle and stay on the Book screen
  2. Answer an incoming call, end it and return to the app
  3. Tap Book

Device & OS4

CAB-29

Pickup from inside a building with a weak GPS fix

P2compatibilityreal phone
  1. Open the app indoors, away from windows, on the ground floor of an office
  2. Look at the pickup pin and any accuracy message
  3. Correct the pin by dragging it, then book

Expected: The app warns that your location may be inaccurate or asks you to confirm the pickup, rather than silently placing the pin on the next street.

Why a real phone: Weak indoor GPS fixes cannot be reproduced with a mocked location.

CAB-30

Trip sharing keeps updating under OEM battery savers

P1compatibilityreal phone
  1. On a Xiaomi, Realme or Vivo phone with battery saver on, start a ride
  2. Share the trip with a contact, then lock the phone for the whole ride
  3. Watch the shared link on the contact's phone

Expected: The shared link keeps moving with the ride, or clearly shows when the location was last updated, until the ride ends.

Why a real phone: Each OEM battery saver limits background location differently on real phones.

CAB-31

Location permission denied or allowed only once

P2compatibility
  1. Deny location permission at first launch
  2. Set the pickup by searching or by moving the map, and book
  3. Allow location only this time, close the app and reopen it

Expected: Booking still works with a typed or moved pickup, and on reopening the app asks again instead of showing a wrong default pickup.

CAB-32

Booking map on a budget phone

P3performancereal phone
  1. On a 3–4 GB RAM Android phone, open the app with location on
  2. Pan and zoom the map while nearby vehicles are shown
  3. Switch between bike, auto and cab

Expected: The map stays responsive, vehicle markers update without the app freezing, and switching options does not reload the whole screen.

Why a real phone: Map rendering lag and memory pressure only appear on real budget hardware.

Security & privacy3

CAB-33

Driver enters a wrong OTP

P1security
  1. When the driver arrives, enter a wrong OTP in the driver test app
  2. Try a wrong OTP a few more times
  3. Look at the rider app

CAB-34

Raise an SOS during the trip

P1securityreal phone
  1. In a test build where SOS goes to test contacts only, start a ride
  2. Tap SOS and choose to alert emergency contacts
  3. Check the test contact's phone

Expected: SOS is reachable in one or two taps during the trip, asks before calling anyone, and the test contact receives your live location and vehicle details.

Why a real phone: Alerts go out by real SMS or calls and use the phone's live GPS.

CAB-35

Share the trip with a contact

P2security
  1. During a ride, tap Share trip and send the link to another phone
  2. Open the link on that phone without logging in
  3. Open it again after the ride ends

Expected: The link shows the driver's name, vehicle number and live location without your phone number, and stops showing location once the ride ends.

Accessibility & language3

CAB-36

Book a ride with TalkBack

P2accessibility
  1. Turn on TalkBack and open the app
  2. Set pickup and drop, move through the vehicle options and book
  3. Move focus to the OTP once a driver is assigned

Expected: Each vehicle option is read with its fare and arrival time, and the OTP and vehicle number are read out digit by digit.

CAB-37

Place names in Hindi, old and new city names, and spelling variants

P2localization
  1. Search for a drop in Hindi, such as रेलवे स्टेशन
  2. Search Bangalore and then Bengaluru, Gurgaon and then Gurugram
  3. Search a misspelt area name, such as Kormangala

Expected: Each search finds the intended place, old and new city names return the same results, and Hindi suggestions show readable area names.

CAB-38

Booking at the largest font and display size

P2accessibility
  1. Set font size and display size to the largest in phone settings
  2. Book a ride and wait for a driver to be assigned

Expected: Fares, the OTP and the vehicle number stay fully visible, and the Book and Cancel buttons are not pushed off screen.

In the field

Where cab and auto booking breaks on real phones

  • GPS drift near tall buildings puts the pickup on the wrong side of a divided road or at the wrong gate, so drivers cancel or riders pay waiting charges.
  • A network drop or Wi-Fi handover while searching for a driver leaves the rider retrying, and two rides get booked.
  • On Xiaomi, Realme and Vivo phones with battery saver on, background location stops, so trip sharing and SOS location go stale mid-ride.
  • Cancellation fees appear on the next ride's bill without having been shown when the rider cancelled.
  • The ride OTP is not shown without network, so riders in basements and parking lots cannot start the ride.
  • UPI payment at the end of the ride fails or times out, and the ride is left unpaid or paid twice.

Questions

About testing cab and auto booking

How do you test cancellation fees in a cab booking app?

Cancel at each stage: right after booking, after the driver accepts, after the free window and after the driver has arrived. Check that the app shows the exact fee and the reason before you confirm, and that the same amount appears on the receipt or the next ride's bill. Also check that a driver cancellation never charges the rider.

How should a ride-start OTP be tested?

Check that the ride starts only after the driver enters the correct OTP, that wrong attempts are limited, and that the OTP disappears once the trip starts. Also check that the OTP is still visible when the rider's phone is offline, and that it reaches the right person when the ride is booked for someone else.

Which cab booking test cases need a real phone?

Pickup accuracy needs real GPS at real places, including indoors and at large stations. UPI payment at the end of the ride, SMS to another rider, SOS alerts and trip sharing under OEM battery savers also need real devices. Fare rules, cancellation fees and receipts can be checked with test accounts on an emulator.
